I hadn't caught the bit of irony in this initial post on The Great Emergence being right on top of the last one from Hauerwas about authority. So much of how Tickle presents the great upheavals in Christianity (and before) reference in direct ways where and with whom, in what 'authority' rests. It is suggested from her text quoting Mark Dyer (got a b+ in his theology class) that the eroding of the known and familiar 'authority' is predictive of the big rummage sale that results in the re-ordering of the known into the new. We are in that place now - what will be the new 'authority'?

PRECISELY, Malinda --I think that is the BIG question... and what the current mess in the church is all about.

In the nation, we have placed all authority in the corporations and the might dollar --the bottom line. In the church, some are trying to place all authority in scripture --and it ain't flying far in a church which places equal weight in sacraments and experience/reason etc.... and if you are going to talk about the priesthood of all believers --live in to the charge in the BCP that ALL the people of God are engaged in the ministry of the church --the question of authority becomes one of prime importance.

Hang on --it's gonna be a wild ride!!!

Yeppa - a wild ride for sure.

Thinking out loud now - I would say that authority at this point is a tug of war between: the dollar (consumerism), the individual (ice cream truck church), and the internet (instant access to "the answer")

Yes --another reflection on Hauerwas's insistence of authority in community....?
